Karl-Heinz Drescher, one of the leading graphic designers in East Germany, died on May 19, 2011. Born in 1936 in Quirl, Riesengebirge, he worked from 1962 to 1999 as the main poster designer at Bertold Brecht's theater Berliner Ensemble. His work includes about 400 posters for which he won many prizes at the yearly DDR poster competition "Die 100 besten Plakate des Jahres".

I once met him spontaneously on the street in Berlin, and he promptly invited me to see the play "Galileo Galilei" by Brecht, and loaned me one of his hats so that we could visit the jewish cemetery together the next day, properly dressed. I remember him as kind and gentle man, with a passion for the theater.
