The wave of Hokusai
A few months ago, in October of 2010, I prepared a poster for my solo exhibition in Tokyo. I designed, then, one of the famous views of Mount Fuji by Katsushika Hokusai, which seemed to be the symbol of everything I had always admired in Japan: the great harmony of shapes, the composure of the lines, but also the sudden and terrible force of nature , its capricious unpredictability. Then the horror of these months, the tidal wave, tsunami, destruction and death. The wave of Hokusai I designed it has since become, then, immediately after the disaster, a manifesto of solidarity among the many graphic designers around the world dedicated to Japan: the wave had suddenly transformed from a ed'equilibrio miracle of art, in a terrible monster, but had also become the symbol of the very soul of Japan, its incredible composure and dignity, of his rise up the disaster, starting again, taken the day, to reorganize and rebuild, to invent a new future. From "the abyss of despair" could be seen again, eternal and unchanging, the silhouette of Mount Fuji.
