WAR RESISTERS LEAGUE SPARKING CHANGE IN 2010
Colorful Calendar Celebrates Poster Art

The War Resisters League, America’s most venerable anti-war group, today announced the publication of its 2010 peace calendar, Sparking Change: Poster Art & Politics (ISBN: 0-940862-22-0), featuring 52 posters from artists young and old from around the world. The images address issues including stopping the war in the Middle East, saving the environment, improving workers’ lives, and equal rights for women. Edited by celebrated artist Luba Lukova, the calendar contains work by Fang Chen (China), Lex Drewinski (Germany), McRay Magleby (USA), Aleksandra Nina Knezevic (Bosnia & Herzegovina), Chaz Maviyane-Davies (Zimbabwe), Yossi Lemel (Israel), Parisa Tashikori (Iran), Peter Kuper (USA), Felipe Galindo (Mexico) and many more.

In her foreword, Lukova writes, “Does art really change anything? I do believe so…It is impossible for art to fix a declining economy or stop all wars, but art changes the way people see and understand reality. And if as artists we often lose faith in the impact of our work, those in power are quite aware of it.”

Liz Roberts, War Resisters League Development Coordinator, said, “It was a privilege to work with Luba on this calendar. Her passion for her work and her commitment to non-violent social change moved her to create a book that will inspire us all year round, and continue the WRL mission.”

In addition to the 52 pages of color artwork, the calendar includes 52 pages – one for each week – noting events vital to the history of the movement for peace and social justice. There is also a directory of peace and justice organizations and publications in the United States, as well as a list of international contacts. Spiral bound, 128 pages, 5 ˝“ x 8 ˝”, Sparking Change: Poster Art & Politics retails for $14.95. It is available directly from the War Resisters League (http://www.warresisters.org/store) and better bookstores everywhere.

The War Resisters League is an 86-year-old secular pacifist organization, headquartered in New York City, and is affiliated with the War Resisters’ International, which is based in London. WRL believes war to be a crime against humanity, and advocates Gandhian nonviolence as the method for creating a democratic society free of war, racism, sexism, and human exploitation.
