CALL FOR ENTRIES

Palestinian Poster Project "Don't Say You Didn't Know"
An exhibition of posters concerning the injustices imposed on the people of Palestine by the State of Israel.

(received 2000.12.09 from Dana Bartelt,
graphic designer and author of the book Both Sides of Peace: Israeli and Palestinian Political Poster Art (1998))

Dear participants,

The purpose of this exhibition is to tell the truth which has eluded the masses because of a biased media. Just as in Central and Eastern Europe when the media was controlled by totalitarian regimes, one way to get the message to the people was through posters produced by private means, so will we produce posters and disseminate them throughout the world. We need posters that speak about the particular issues in an honest, forthright manner.

The intent of this project is to display these posters in the streets of as many international cities as possible. To able to do this, I will create a CD-ROM with all the images and send them to the participants, who will then print them out and disseminate them throughout their city and send the disk on to someone in another city who will print them out and put them up in their city and so forth. Any venues are acceptable-restaurants, shops, universities, telephone poles, etc.

Please send to me in jpeg format your poster-either in black and white or color to the proportion of 11 inch by 17 inch (tabloid size). I will then compile the CD with all the posters and mail it to you. The deadline to receive the poster is January 30, 2001. Make sure you include your mailing address. Send to dana@loyno.edu

If you have any questions please write to me.(Between December 7 and January 14, 2001 please email to danabartelt@hotmail.com) Here are some websites to refer to for more information about Palestinian issues: www.pij.org, law@lawsociety.org

Here are some of the points we should cover: (Please try to be specific in your message; a generic 'peace poster' is no longer effectual)

Palestinian Independence

The illegal building of Jewish settlements on Palestinian lands. Settlements in the Occupied Territories were established in violation of the Fourth Geneva Convention. The presence of settlers, who are a permanent source of violence against the Palestinian civilian population in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, is therefore illegal. As occupying power, Israel is under the obligation to protect the Palestinian civilian population against any attacks, including those carried out by Israeli settlers.

The demolishing of Palestinian homes and villages to make room for more illegal Jewish settlements. The destruction of property of the occupied civilian population, which is not of military necessity, is a violation of international humanitarian law. The United Nations Security Council needs to act upon resolution 242 and 338 in order to ensure Israel's compliance with its stipulations concerning the inadmissibility of the acquisition of Territory by force.

The right of return for Palestinian refugees. The right to return is deeply anchored in all human rights instruments supporting the provisions of UN Resolution 194, which sets down the legitimate right of the Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.

The return of East Jerusalem

The excessive use of force by the Israeli security forces, especially against Palestinian children. The IDF's orders to shoot to kill, aiming at the head and chest resulting in over 200 deaths(mostly civilian) and thousands injured and many blinded. The Government of Israel should comply with the relevant provisions of the Fourth Geneva Convention, aimed at safeguarding the rights of protected persons in situations of belligerent occupation. Concern about the lack of protection afforded to Palestinian civilians by the Israeli occupying power. Since the outbreak of the Al Aqsa Intifada a considerable number of settler attacks have been carried against Palestinians, in many cases with the acquiescence and sometimes even support of the Israeli security forces. Settler attacks are also preventing Palestinian farmers from harvesting fruits and vegetables. Moreover, Israeli settlers and soldiers have uprooted olive trees in different areas in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Water rights

Palestinian prisoners (torture and illegal detention)

Racism, Human rights, Civil rights, Equal rights of Israeli Arabs (Palestinians)

Other related issues: Biased Media, US Government support (billions of dollars)

I look forward to receiving your work. Thank you for your participation,

Dana Bartelt
