The motto of the exhibition
XXI ECOLOGY UNLIMITED - this motto determines our whole exhibition. Back in 1991 when we organized the first "4th Block" exhibition, none of us imagined it would continue. Consciously or subconsciously we have made an attempt to transfer Chernobyl from politics, economy, health care into the domain of art, thus adding the feeling of haute tragedie to this notion. Quite unexpectedly to ourselves we were welcomed by the colleagues from different countries of the world - the exhibition was a success.

Three years later the first one was followed by a second, then in 1997 came a third... And now when Ukraine has faced amassed political, economical, and social problems (not the least of them is Chernobyl) and is falling into the abyss of ecological disaster, it is extremely important to understand the international experience of the environmental problems and harmony of human relations with nature.

We are convinced that it Is the people of art, artists, designers from different countries being able to express vividly and sincerely their reflections and feelings about the ecological and other disaster of our times, they will be able to oppose ecological downfall.

The aim of the exhibition
is by the artistic means to remind the people of the forthcoming XXI century about Chernobyl -the greatest technological disaster of the passing century. To show the multidimensional and acute character of the relations between nature and human being.

A comment by Rene Wanner

"Block 4" refers to the part of the Chernobyl nuclear power station that blew up on April 26, 1986.

The name was chosen by Oleg Veklenko, a graphic designer and photographer, for the the small poster museum and the poster triennales in Kharkiv that he organizes to keep the memory of this tragic accident alive. He was in Chernobyl two days after the explosion, called for duty as a reservist for the clean-up operation. The collection of photographs and drawings that he made of his fellow workers during the next two months are some of the most moving documents I have seen.

If you are a graphic designer or artist and care about these things, I urge you to participate. Previous contributors include Walter Allner, Roman Cieslewicz, Alan Fletcher, Shigeo Fukuda, Joao Machado, Shin Matsunaga, Kazumasa Nagai, Phil Risbeck, Paula Scher, Klaus Staeck, Henry Steiner, David Tartakover, Tadanori Yokoo, to name a few.

And remember that Kharkiv is the birth place of A.M. Cassandre.
