COMPETITION REGULATION
Introduction

After “Social Design Contest: Autism” (2009) and “Design Vs Poverty” (2010), Social Design Poster organize a new poster design contest:

“SEEDS OF PEACE: the Healing Power of Dialogue”.

The competion is part of the larger Social Design Poster that aims to create Value developing the dialogue on important topical issues and, at the same time, to spread the culture of graphic design.

Social Design Poster believe that the design can change the world, can help people to be more free-minded. Design is a democratic tool, because, as Giulio Carlo Argan once said: "Those who chose not to design, already decided to be designed."

In any designer should be a bit of the soul of Odysseus, his eagerness to venture into unknown seas, a little bit of courage. Intellectual curiosity is the only one that will allow people to increase their knowledge and have a critical attitude (that is, the attitude of a free-man).

Brief

To reach this great purpose of the well-being of all humankind we should start from an internal disarment, start form “The Healing Power of Dialogue”.

“We have to carefully define the meaning of “healing” and of “dialogue.” Healing means healing the wounds of separation inherent in modern society […] We have misunderstood the real meaning of individualism by creating lives of isolation […] Clearly, dialogue is more than an ordinary conversation. The purpose of dialogue is to understand others — not just to share our independent views. That would limit our exchange to information and dialogue is not just about information. In a dialogue, we have a responsibility to be present and enrich each other. We should always remember that the words “respond” and “responsibility” comes from the same Latin word, respondere, which means “promise” (Masao Yokota, president of Boston Ikeda Center)
We should listen to the others, we should care to them. But we should, first of all, understand other people’s feelings. We should always remember we are all part of a greatest ensamble, we are not so “individual” and we are all leaves of the same tree.

Following the website everyone will be able to share a great debate on the suject.

Suggestion

The images should speak by themselves. For this reason we do not recommend to use in the poster the words "seeds of peace" and "power of dialogue.". Naturally this is only a suggestion and not a strict rule.

We also hope the designers to deal the debate honestly and thoroughly, to avoid rhetorical posters, and consistently to the theme of the competition itself.

As well as we suggest to focus the attention on the theme of the contest. The theme is the debate among people, its power to be an engine of growth and its peace-making among men; this implies that the competition is not about “War between nations”, it is not a "political" contest in the narrowest sense: the theme is humanistic and social.
